What is electrical leaking?
Energy consumed by appliances when they are switched off or not performing their principal functions, that is while they are plugged in.

Estimates are 50 watts per household. (according to Berkeley Lab)

My action today was to go around the house and start unplugging.

I found 3 lamps that are seldom used. Action - unplugged.
A DVD player and TV that are almost never used. Action - unplugged
A stereo system that has 3 separate power adapters. Action - turned off the power strip.
2 Kitchen appliances that can be unplugged when not in use. Action - unplugged.

I have 3 items that I find are a little more difficult to take this action with, my mobile phone, my laptop and my printer. It seems like I use these so much that unplugging and plugging each time can be cumbersome. But I'll work on a solution.

Anyone else have ideas?

Mike,

If you don't mind shelling out some dough ($30) you can get a power strip that will automatically turn your peripherals off when not in use. http://www.terrapass.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Sto...
