I DO! I Do!

It's warming up here in Washington D.C. and that means it's time for Farmers' Markets. Lots of local communities have great markets that sell everything from fresh cut flowers to organic milk. Every Saturday I head over to the Arlington Farmers' Market held in the parking lot of the Arlington Courthouse. Growers can not travel more then 125 miles to get here but you would be amazed at what arrives on Saturday. Fresh peaches, strawberries, apples, corn, tomatoes and squash. There are also a number of local bakeries that sell home made treats. One of my favorite vendors sells home-made mozzarella (and then I walk next door to get the fresh basil and tomatoes!)

CALL TO ACTION! So what are the Farmers' Markets in your area? Check out what's happening in your community around local produce. What are the local growers doing about sustainability on their farms?

If you want to learn more about how the farmer's markets started in the DC area, you can go and talk to Chip or Susan Planck at the Wheatland Vegetable Farms stand. These folks helped make it happen in metro DC and are just all around great people. I worked on the farm summer of 1995 and 1996. They used to go to the Saturday market at Falls Church, the SUnday market in Tacoma Park, the Wednesday market in Vienna, and a bunch of other ones too. I hope they are still around and you get a chance to talk to them.

We have an incredible amount of farmers markets for such a small state (RI). There have been articles in local magazines about the beginning of the season and I have to tell you- I am psyched! I cannot wait to start buying local again! We have a great website- farmfreshri.org that pretty much tells you where and when all the farmers markets are- through out the state its safe to say you can find a market or a farm stand open any day of the week. I don't even want to see the inside of a market this summer!

Thanks Elizabeth. I will be in Newport, RI for a weekend in June and it would be great to find a market and get a picnic for our sight seeing trip. I will check out that site.

Alysha, DEFINITELY hit the Aquidneck growers market- I believe its on Saturdays and is held on the grounds of the Newport Vineyards. It is THE BEST in RI.

We are so lucky in California that we have Farmer's Markets that are open year round. Most Sundays we are down at the Palo Alto California Avenue Farmer's Market. Being able to go year round has really given me an appreciation for seasonal foods and organizing your diet around what's in season.
