For the month of May - I am committing to not buy any packaged or processed foods. My goal is use all the pasta, cans of tuna and chicken, oatmeal, pancake mix, soups, peanut butter and jellies, and any other random items that are in that deep dark place.

My trips to the grocery store or farmer's market will only include - fresh produce, meat and milk.

If anyone wants that can of split pea soup - let me know!

I kind of have a similar goal- I really want to reduce the amount of trash that sits on my curb Sunday nights. It's not that bad but we can always do better and I think part of this is buying less stuff that comes in packaging. So I'm going to start avoiding buying such things- even down to, instead of buying the easy store made hummus, why don't I make my own? I would rather recycle a can the chick peas came in than down-cycle the plastic the hummus came in.

Hey Elizabeth - Thanks for sharing! Homemade hummus is sooo much better than store bought anyway! Just dont forget the Tahini!

I think you would enjoy this article about one man's experiment to save and live with his trash just to see what he is using.

For a girl who can not resist the temptation of Whole Foods on my walk home from the Metro this has been quite the challenge. In the process of cleaning out my cupboards, freezer, and hall pantry I realized how far some of this food traveled just to make it into my house. Most of it was not locally grown and a lot of was packaged using preservatives I can not even pronounce. I think that this is one challenge I may stick with past the month of May...which is more then I can say of my exercise plan...
